"Pulpits Aflame with Righteousness"

This is one of my favorite quotes. It is from the "Evil Empire" speech that Ronald Reagan gave in 1983.

"And finally, that shrewdest of all observers of American democracy, Alexis de Tocqueville, put it eloquently after he had gone on a search for the secret of America's greatness and genius--and he said: "Not until I went into the churches of America and heard her pulpits aflame with righteousness did I understand the greatness and the genius of America. . . . America is good. And if America ever ceases to be good, America will cease to be great."

This was certainly true in 1831, when de Tocqueville came to America. We still belong to God and he will save us. We have been through worse storms than this. God bless the United States of America.

God Bless America Again

God has blessed America more than any other nation in the world. Why? Because we are his people, and our government is based on his word. He has done for us exactly what he said he would do in Deuteronomy, Chapter 28:

"And it shall come to pass, if thou shalt hearken diligently unto the voice of the Lord thy God, to observe and to do all his commandments which I command thee this day, that the Lord thy God will set thee on high above all nations of the earth: And all these blessings shall come on thee, and overtake thee, if thou shalt hearken unto the voice of the Lord thy God.

Blessed shalt thou be in the city, and blessed shalt thou be in the field. Blessed shalt be the fruit of thy body, and the fruit of thy cattle, the increase of thy kine, and the flocks of thy sheep. Blessed shall be thy basket and thy store. Blessed shalt thou be when thou comest in, and blessed shalt thou be when thou goest out.

The Lord shall cause thine enemies that rise up against thee to be smitten before thy face: they shall come out against thee one way, and flee before thee seven ways. The Lord shall command the blessing upon thee in thy storehouses, and in all that thou settest thine hand unto; and he shall bless thee in the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.

The Lord shall establish thee an holy people unto himself, as he hat sworn unto thee, if thou shalt keep the commandments of the Lord thy God, and walk in his ways.

And all people of the earth shall see that thou art called by the name of the Lord; and they shall be afraid of thee. And the Lord shall make thee plenteous in goods, in the fruit of thy cattle, and in the fruit of thy ground, in the land which the Lord sware unto thy fathers to give thee.

The Lord shall open unto thee his good treasure, the heaven to give the rain unto thy land in his season, and to bless all the work of thine hand: and thou shalt lend unto many nations, and thou shalt not borrow.

And the Lord shalt make thee the head, and not the tail; and thou shalt be above only, and thou shalt not be beneath; if that thou hearken unto the commandments of the Lord thy God, which I command thee this day, to observe and to do them."

This passage of scripture accurately describes what America used to be like. All of these promises of God were fulfilled in us. We were blessed in the city and blessed in the field. Our enemies were smitten before us and were afraid of us. We were the head and not the tail, and we used to lend to other nations instead of borrowing from them.

So where did we go wrong? Obviously, as a nation, we are rebelling against God's commandments. That prevents God from blessing us. "Thus saith God, Why transgress ye the commandments of the Lord, that ye cannot prosper? because ye have forsaken the Lord, he hath also forsaken you." (2 Chronicles 24:20)

But it's not too late for us to return to the Lord He is rich in mercy, and he will bless us again. Look at what he says in Isaiah 1:18-20.

"Come now, and let us reason together, saith the Lord; thou your sins be as scarlet, they shall be white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool. If ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land: But if ye refuse and rebel, ye shall be devoured with the sword: for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it."

What Is The Secret of America's Success?

The people of America and the people of France got rid of their monarchs at about the same time and set out to govern themselves. The French decided that they didn't want anybody telling them what to do, not even God, so they ditched him too.

The Americans were Bible-believing Christians. They based their lives on what God said in the Bible. The whole world watched as the United States grew and prospered.

In 1831, French philosopher and author Alexis de Tocqueville came to America on a mission to discover the secret of her success. This was his report.

"In the end, the state of the Union comes down to the character of the people....I sought for the greatness and genius of America in her commodious harbors, her ample rivers, and it was not there. I sought for it in the fertile fields, and boundless praires, and it was not there. Not until I went into the churches of America and heard her pulpits aflame with righteousness did I understand the secret of her genius and power."

The secret of America's success is the blessing of God. Government has nothing to do with it. The best thing that government can do is to leave us alone. The worst thing they can do is to limit the free exercise of Christianity.
